Sea Salt Spray For Beach Hair
Traditional sea salt spray mimics the ocean water by using salt and water to give your hair a textured & wavy look. It works well, but can cause damage if used too often by drying out your hair and scalp.
For a less harsh alternative, this recipe calls for epsom salt & sugar which will give your hair a textured look but not dry it out as much as sea salt.
Ingredients in Non-Drying Sea Salt Spray
Water is the base of this sea salt spray and with a few other ingredients it makes the best non-drying spray that will still give you a beachy look.
Epsom Salt
Epsom salt is a huge source of magnesium. It is used for many health benefits & can also benefit your hair. The magnesium will help to strengthen your hair and nourish your scalp.
Using epsom salt in this spray will help add volume to your hair without drying it out.
White Sugar
Sugar spray for hair is not talked about as often as sea salt spray, but it has some great benefits. Sugar spray is very similar to the effects that hair spray has. It gives your hair grip & sheen, while not drying it out.
Fractionated Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a powerhouse when it comes to skin & hair care. It helps with hair growth, tames frizz, & even gives UV protection from the sun. The added ingredient to sea salt spray will help to keep your hair moisturized.

How to Make Sea Salt Spray
Tools Needed
Pot to boil water
Ingredients
1 cup water
2 teaspoons epsom salt
1 TBSP white sugar
1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil (can also use jojoba or argan oil)
1 TBSP aloe vera
1 teaspoon vodka or rum (as preservative)
Instructions
- Boil water & add epsom salt & white sugar. Stir until fully dissolved.
- Remove water from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
- Add coconut oil, aloe vera, & vodka to the water mixture and stir well.
- Pour mixture into a spray bottle & give a good shake to mix everything together.
How to Use Beach Spray
Make sure to give the bottle a good shake before each use. This spray is best used on damp hair. After your shower, towel dry your hair. Then, lightly spritz sea salt spray on your hair (mostly focusing on middle & tips area) and give a few good scrunches with your hand.
For even better protection, use a leave-in conditioner before spraying in your hair. You can also apply a little argan oil to your tips before spraying on for extra moisture.
You can also spritz the spray on dry hair for a quick messy & volumized look. Just give it a scrunch with your hands and let it dry.
Tips For Making
- Instead of coconut oil, you may choose to use argan oil or jojoba oil instead.
- You can use normal coconut oil if you don’t have fractionated, just make sure to add it to the water to melt & mix well.
- If you don’t want to use vodka or rum in your spray, just make a smaller amount of the spray and use within a month.
- The aloe vera is optional but highly recommended for added moisture & protection.
Which Hair Type Can Use Beach Spray?
This spray might have a slightly different effect on each person’s hair type, but it will give texture and volume to all. You might want to reduce or increase the amount of spray you use based on your hair type and if it is giving you the texture you’re looking for.
Sea salt spray will enhance curls for curly hair. It will also add waves & texture to straight hair. This spray will give you more volume and texture no matter your hair type.
Epsom Salt & Sugar Spray
This spray uses a mixture of epsom salt and sugar for the hair benefits. The mixture is less harsh than using sea salt but still gives your hair beautiful beach waves. You’ll look like you just stepped out of the ocean while protecting your hair from dryness & damage.
FAQ
Can sea salt spray damage your hair?
Sea salt is drying for your hair, so you don’t want to use it daily. Epsom salt when used in moderation on your hair is less drying and even has some benefits, so it is safer to use in moderation without damaging your hair.
Is sea salt spray good for your hair?
Sea salt spray can dry your hair out if used too much. This recipe uses epsom salt & sugar in place of sea salt for a less harsh approach that can also benefit your hair growth.
Can you make sea salt spray with regular salt?
Using regular table salt in your spray will give you a similar textured look, but I don’t recommend it because it will be very drying for your hair.
Do you put sea salt spray on wet or dry hair?
For the best result, you should spray onto wet hair. You can also spritz the spray on your dry hair to give it a little more volume & messy look.
What can I use instead of sea salt?
Epsom salt and sugar spray! Epsom salt and sugar are less harsh on your hair but will still give your hair a textured look.
Does sea salt spray thicken hair?
Sea salt spray gives a temporary look of thick hair as it gives your hair volume and texture. It will not thicken your hair long-term.
How often can I use?
Sea salt spray can be very drying for your hair, so it is best to only use it a few times a week and wash in between uses. If you use this recipe with epsom salt & sugar instead, you can use it more often as it is less harsh on your hair.
How long does this spray last for?
This recipe uses vodka or rum as a preservative to help the spray last longer. This spray will last 3-6 months if stored in an airtight bottle. Keep an eye on the spray to ensure mold hasn’t started forming.
