What Is Tallow?
Tallow is what is leftover from rendered beef fat. Animal fat has many great benefits when used on the skin due to the vitamins and nutrients that come from the animal.
You can buy tallow at a grocery store like Whole Foods, online, or even make your own from beef fat. It is best to use tallow from grass-fed cows if possible.

What Are The Benefits Of Beef Tallow?
Tallow has so many benefits for your skin. It is great for skin irritations and even diaper rash. It includes Omega 7 (also called palmitoleic acid) which has anti-inflammatory properties in it. Omega 7 also helps to deeply moisturize your skin from the inside out.
Tallow includes Vitamin E and Vitamin F (also known as linoleic acid) which deeply moisturizes dry skin. These vitamins also add a barrier to your skin to help with protecting from UV rays and other air pollutants.
Beef tallow is a great choice for your body or face as it is easy on sensitive skin. It is full of fatty acids that help to combat fine lines and give your skin a youthful glow.

You can use carrier oils other than the olive oil and aloe vera if you prefer. Use another liquid oil like fractionated coconut oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil in place of these ingredients.
Olive Oil
Olive oil has been used for centuries on the skin. It is full of fatty acids, which help to rejuvenate your skin and give you a natural glow.
Other benefits include reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which help with any skin irritations.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is used frequently for sunburns due to its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties.
I’ve included aloe vera in this recipe because it is so beneficial when it comes to skin conditions like acne & eczema. If you choose to use this lotion on your face, you’ll love how wonderful it makes your skin look.
Beeswax
Beeswax is used in skincare to help lock in moisture. It helps to soften your skin and increase elasticity.
Beeswax is also great at protecting your skin while preventing premature aging.
Essential Oil
This lotion is a great way to use drops of your favorite essential oil. There are many essential oils that are great for your skin and have so many benefits.
I personally love using lavender or sweet orange oil if I want to add a scent to my lotion.
Make sure that you don’t use citrus oils that are phototoxic as they will cause your skin to be extra sensitive to sunlight.
Instructions
Making this tallow is very easy to do and only takes a few minutes of hands-on time.
1. Melt Tallow & Beeswax
The first step is to use a double boiler to melt your tallow and beeswax. If you don’t have a double boiler, then you can use an insulated mixing bowl over a pot of water.
Let heat over very low heat and allow the ingredients to melt together.
2. Add Other Oils
After the tallow and beeswax are melted together, remove the bowl from the heat. Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes so the oils can cool down just a little bit.
Then, add in your aloe vera and olive oil and give it all a good stir.
3. Let It Cool
Now you’re going to let the oils start to solidify back together. This can take 1-3 hours at room temperature.
I like to speed up the process and put the bowl in the fridge for 30-60 minutes. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t over harden.
You want the oils to solidify just enough that you can poke your finger into it and still leave an indent.
4. Mix
Once the oils are at the right solid consistency, use a hand mixer or Kitchen Aid to whip the oils together. This will take 1-2 minutes depending on your mixer.
You don’t want to over mix. You want the oils to be a thick, creamy consistency.
5. Add Essential Oils (Optional)
If you choose to add essential oils, then you should do so now. Then, give it another quick whip with your mixer to incorporate the oils into the lotion.
6. Store
Store this lotion in a glass jar, such as a mason jar. Glass is the best option when storing your skincare because plastic could start to leak into your lotion.
This lotion has a shelf life of at least 6-12 months. Just keep an eye on it. If it looks normal and smells normal, then it is still good to use.
Tips
- If your lotion seems too greasy, add a small pinch of arrowroot powder to help reduce any greasy residue.
- You can use other carrier oils in place of the olive oil (ex. Avocado oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.)
- If you don’t have beef tallow, then you can replace it with a different solid oil (ex. Shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, etc.)
- Don’t over mix your tallow balm, just whip enough for it to become a creamy consistency.
How To Use
Use tallow balm as often as you like. I recommend using it daily for the best benefits. Just use a small dab on your fingertips and rub into your face or all over.
A small amount goes a long way, so I like to just use a dab for my face.
