Why Make Your Own Toothpaste?
I never used to read ingredients on my health and hygiene products. Mostly, because I didn’t know what half the ingredients were. A lightbulb finally switched on in my head when I realized if I don’t know what it is, it probably isn’t good for me.
Store bought toothpaste usually includes a laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients. Many of those ingredients can be harmful to us: hello, fluoride… Since toothpaste is something we use twice or more per day, I decided it was time to make a switch to something more natural.
Store Brand Natural Toothpaste Goes Wrong!
I started out by buying this Tom’s natural toothpaste brand at the store because I didn’t want to fool with making my own. Again, I didn’t know much about ingredient lists, but I figured if it claimed to be all-natural, it had to be somewhat better than the typical toothpastes I was buying.
A few months after using Tom’s toothpaste, I started to experience tooth sensitivity. Plus, I found out I had a cavity for the first time in a decade. I couldn’t believe it!
One of my family members, who is a bit more well-versed in unhealthy ingredients, told me that Tom’s Toothpaste (among many others) includes an ingredient called Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which makes the toothpaste foam up. There is no health benefit for including the ingredient in toothpaste, and unfortunately it can irritate your teeth & gums and cause sensitivity.
Ingredients in All-Natural Toothpaste
When I realized I couldn’t totally trust all-natural toothpaste from the store, I decided to make my own. I started off very basic in the beginning. I would combine baking soda, coconut oil, & salt for my toothpaste. Salt is like an abrasive, so it helps scrub your teeth, while the baking soda & coconut oil clean & whiten your teeth. Those 3 ingredients are as natural as you can get and make your teeth feel so polished and clean!
I wanted a little more oomph in my toothpaste, so I researched ways to sweeten it and found that Stevia is a safe way to sweeten the toothpaste without harming your teeth. Also, in order to give it a minty flavor, I used drops of Peppermint Essential Oil.
Toothpaste Ingredients for Sensitive Teeth (Remineralization)
Since I was dealing with tooth sensitivity, I wanted to find an ingredient to help strengthen my teeth. I found that Calcium Carbonate is great for remineralizing teeth, which is a fancy way to say, “strengthen teeth.” It has made a huge difference in my oral health, so I make sure to include it in my toothpaste frequently. I don’t plan to use it forever, but I do like to include it off and on in my recipe to ensure my teeth stay healthy and strong.

How to Make All-Natural Toothpaste
Making toothpaste can be very simple. I used to just use a small ramekin, put softened coconut oil, baking soda, & salt into it and messily stir it all up. Voila! It was ready to go in under 2 minutes. Then, I would just dip my toothpaste into the ramekin each time I brushed my teeth.
Now, I have gotten a little more sophisticated with my method. I like to measure everything out and then whip it together.
Ingredients
- Coconut Oil
- Baking Soda
- Real Salt
- Peppermint Oil
- Stevia
- Calcium Carbonate (optional)

Step-By-Step Instructions To Make All-Natural Toothpaste
Start with softened coconut oil. I place mine in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave it for 10 seconds so it is soft & easy to mix. *If you plan to use a squeeze bottle, then you should also add 1-1.5 tablespoons of a liquid oil such as olive oil, avocado oil, or fractioned coconut oil so the coconut oil doesn’t solidify in the bottle after it comes back to room temperature.
Next, I add the baking soda, salt, stevia packet, calcium carbonate, & peppermint oil to the bowl. I use a hand mixer and mix the ingredients together for 30-60 seconds until the ingredients are well incorporated and the consistency looks smooth.
After the ingredients are whipped together, I use a small funnel to scoop the toothpaste into a travel-sized squeeze bottle or scoop the toothpaste into a ramekin with a lid to dip your toothbrush in.
Then your toothpaste is ready! I will use it for a few months until it runs out. All of the ingredients are shelf stable, so I don’t worry about it expiring before it runs out. Just keep an eye on your ingredient expiration dates and use your best judgment.
Tips for Making All-Natural Toothpaste
- Start simple – you don’t have to use all of the ingredients the first time you make toothpaste. Your first batch could just be combining the coconut oil, baking soda, & salt. It isn’t the most delicious flavor, but your teeth will still feel so polished and healthy.
- If you’re using a squeeze bottle, you need to add 1-1.5 tablespoons of another oil like olive oil, avocado oil, or fractioned coconut oil to keeps the coconut oil soft.
- You don’t have to use calcium carbonate every time. It isn’t a common ingredient that we have on hand, so I don’t use it every time. If I’m not using Calcium Carbonate, I just add an extra tablespoon of baking soda to the recipe.
- If you don’t have a squeeze bottle, use a ramekin with a lid or small tupperware. The thought of dipping my toothpaste in a ramekin over and over again used to gross me out. Now, I realize I used to swipe my toothbrush on the same toothpaste nozzle for months on end which isn’t much different. My husband and I each have our own ramekin so we’re not double dipping together (even though we don’t mind in any other scenario… it just seems gross with the toothbrushes ?).
- If you don’t like the taste of Stevia, you can also use xylitol sweetener. It’s another natural sweetener that is safe to use on your teeth.
- Don’t have a funnel? Use a ziplock baggie and snip off the corner like a piping bag.
One Step Closer To All-Natural
