Upcycled Ideas For Swiffer Pads
There are so many ways to upcycle materials and items you have around the house. Have an old Swiffer laying around that you haven’t bought refills for in a while? Is there an old blanket or microfiber towel that doesn’t get used anymore laying around? Then you’re in the perfect position to make your own DIY reusable Swiffer mop pads!
This sewing project doesn’t have to cost you a dime & it is quick and easy to make with upcycled materials. You’ll save money & can use it for dry or wet mopping.
How To Use DIY Reusable Swiffer Pads?
This pad can be used for wet or dry mopping. You’ll simply tuck it onto your Swiffer mop as you would a disposable pad.
For a dry mop, just run the Swiffer over the floor like normal. The flannel or microfiber material will pick up dust & dirt.
For wet mopping, you can moisten & wring out the pad before you place it on the mop for a wet mop. I use my to spritz around the floor as I’m mopping to clean up dirt & grime.
When you’re finished cleaning, toss the reusable Swiffer pad in the laundry to wash with your other towels. Easy peasy!

What You’ll Need For This Project
Materials
- Piece of paper – 8.5x11in (this is the pattern for the mop pad)
- Tracing marker (I use permanent marker)
- Pins or clips (to secure fabric together)
- Fabric scissors (this scissor kit is my favorite!)
- Thread
- Wooden spoon handle (or any other long object to flip fabric with)
- Sewing Machine (or sew by hand!)
Fabric
- Fleece blanket (you can also use a flannel shirt or microfiber towel)
- Cotton Tshirt
Sewing Instructions
- Trace rectangle using printer paper (8.5x11in) as guide on the fleece/flannel material & on the Tshirt material. Mark a 2-inch space on your rectangle to remind you to leave it open so you can flip the material inside out later.
- Next, cut out both rectangles leaving ½ inch for seam allowance.
- Pin materials together so rectangles line up (doesn’t have to be perfect). *You will flip the material right side out after you sew it together, so if your fleece isn’t the same on both sides, make sure the side you want to mop with is facing the inside as you sew for this step. (See image below)
- Sew a straight stitch along the rectangle guideline that you traced. Make sure not to sew along the 2-inch space you marked.
- Cut off the excess materials along the seam EXCEPT where you left the 2-inch space. (See image below)
- Flip the materials right side out. Use a long wooden spoon to help push the corners out.
- Lastly, tuck the excess material left at the opening into the reusable pad & sew a zig zag stitch around the entire reusable pad.
- Enjoy your DIY reusable Swiffer pad!
Notes
- You can use any fabrics you prefer to use or have on hand. Just make sure it isn’t so thick that it won’t tuck into your Swiffer.
- To keep it really simple, you can just sew the entire reusable pad together with a straight stitch & skip flipping the materials right side out. Just trim the excess material and mop away!
- If you plan to use this for a wet jet, you’ll need to lessen the width to & add some elastic to wrap the pad around your mop OR add straps with snaps to secure it to the mop.
- If you don’t feel like getting the sewing machine out, you can easily sew this project by hand!

I need to make one of these! I do have a swiffer mop and they would come in handy.
This is such a clever idea! I have been wanting to reuse more and not contribute to more trash!
Great idea! I use a reusable pad for my steam mop but not for my swiffer!
I love this reusable mop! Such a great idea! I love that I can wash and re-use and keep it clean all the time.
I love this idea! Not as wasteful!
Love the idea of using an old fleece blanket (especially once it gets pills) instead of throwing it out! Thank you for the easy to follow directions. Excited to make some.
As our norwex pads bite the dust as we just don’t have the time to properly care for them, these will definitely come in handy to replace them, things are so expensive these days!
