What is Chai Tea?
Chai tea is a very popular beverage in India. It is a milky latte style tea with a sweet and spicy flavor. It uses a handful of flavorful spices like cinnamon, cloves, ginger to give it a nice spicy flavor.
Traditional chai tea uses black tea as a base, which makes it a caffeinated drink.
These flavors combined with milk and sugar makes for the perfect mug of tea on a cold winter day.

Chai Tea Mix Ingredients
Like any recipe, you can go the wholesome route and grind your own whole spices with a spice grinder (or food processor). You can get fancy and choose to grind up a cinnamon stick, fresh ginger, star anise, and whole cardamom pods.
But I decided to skip a trip to the grocery store and use the spices that I had on hand. Plus, they are already grounded and ready to go! For this recipe you’ll need:
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Cloves
- Ground Ginger
- Black pepper (optional for extra spice)
You can always add other chai spices like ground cardamom or experiment with spices like coriander or fennel.
If you want caffeine in your mix, just add a little unsweetened instant tea to your jar.
You might also choose to add non-dairy creamer to give it a milkier texture when you make your mug of tea. The options are endless!
Directions To Make Homemade Chai Tea Mix
This recipe is very easy. In a large bowl, add all of your spices. Use a whisk to mix the spices together really well.
Place the chai mix in an airtight container (like a glass jar) and you’re done!
How To Use Chai Tea
In order to use your homemade chai tea mix, warm up 8-12oz of milk and stir in ¼ teaspoon of the mix into the hot milk.
Then, sweeten your tea to your liking. You can use sugar, honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, or any other sweeteners you enjoy. I also like to add a dash of french vanilla extract to my mug.
Then, you’re ready to enjoy!
