How To Make Two Ingredient Chocolate Mousse

You can get fancy and slowly heat your ingredients together, bring them back down to room temperature in an ice bath, and then whip.  But I prefer to do this the fast way!  Here is how I make my 2-ingredient chocolate mousse in less than 5 minutes.

1. Melt Chocolate Chips

First you’ll want to melt the chocolate chips for your chocolate mixture.

I place my chocolate chips in a medium bowl (make sure it is a microwave safe bowl) and microwave it for 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until it is mostly melted. Then give it a final stir until it is all melted together.

You could also do this step with the double boiler method over low heat in a small pot.  That will take a few extra minutes, but either way will work.

2. Whip Your Ingredients Together

You’ll want to immediately start whipping your ingredients together once the chocolate is melted so it doesn’t start to harden back up.

*For the best results, you can let your whipping cream start to come to room temperature for a few minutes before you start melting your chocolate.  This will be less of a temperature shock to your melted chocolate when it’s time to start whipping.

whipping cream & chocolate

To whip, place your heavy whipping cream and melted chocolate into a large bowl or stand mixer.  Start mixing the ingredients together first on a medium low speed for about 20-30 seconds.  This will ensure the ingredients don’t start splattering outside of the bowl and make a mess.

Then, change the speed to high speed to finish whipping your two ingredients together.  You’ll whip for 3-5 minutes depending on the power of the mixer you’re using.

You’ll know the mousse is ready when there are stiff peaks forming on the top.

3. Serve

You can stick your chocolate mousse back in the fridge for 10-15 minutes so it is extra chilled before serving if you’d like.  Otherwise, immediately serve it in small bowls and top with your favorite toppings.

Some topping options are whipped cream, fresh fruit (like fresh berries), pecans, walnuts, sprinkles, high-quality chocolate shavings, etc.

Tips For Making

  • Let the heavy cream come to room temperature for 5-10 minutes before you start making the recipe. It’ll make it easier to mix the melted chocolate into it.
  • You can use any chocolate you prefer, like milk chocolate or dark chocolate, but just make sure it is good quality chocolate for best results.
  • If you use a chocolate bar, make sure to cut it up into chopped chocolate pieces.
  • Whip for at least 3-5 minutes for the right whipped consistency.

Alternative Options

You can alter this recipe to your liking.  For example, you can go dairy-free or choose even more decadent ingredients to include.

Some other options you can choose:

  • Go dairy-free by using a can of coconut cream (coconut milk) instead of heavy cream.
  • Use darker chocolate for a more decadent dessert – consider it a “two ingredient dark chocolate mousse.”
  • Use egg white (remove the egg yolks) with the heavy cream or in place of the heavy cream for a lighter, creamy chocolate mousse.
  • Use white chocolate for a sweeter, white chocolate mousse dessert.

Conclusion

This homemade chocolate mousse is a great addition to your dessert recipes.  If you have little time, it is the perfect dessert to whip up on the spot.  It’s an easy spin on chocolate ganache.  Your family and guests will love this easy, decadent dessert.
